Practice Area Overview 

Sandi Byrd concentrates her practice in the area of criminal defense, DUI defense, juvenile court, and traffic violations. Sandi has tried hundreds of cases during her legal career. She has received not guilty verdicts on a variety of offenses including murder, armed violence, heinous battery, aggravated battery to a peace officer, DUI, domestic violence, drug possession and sale, armed robbery, retail theft, and burglary. Sandi has tried cases before juries and judges. She has also argued hundreds of motions before judges resulting in charges being dismissed against her clients and evidence being thrown out. Sandi’s advocacy for her clients in DUI and traffic matters has resulted in many clients regaining their driving privileges without suffering long suspensions.

Education and Background

Sandi earned her Doctor of Jurisprudence from Indiana University in 1996 and her Bachelor of Science degree in 1993 also from Indiana University. While in law school Sandi participated in the Moot Court competition winning the Best Brief Award in 1995 and serving on the Moot Court Board during the 1995-1996 school year. She was also a member of the Federal Communications Law Journal from 1994-1996 where her Note, Your Life as an Open Book: Has Technology Rendered Personal Privacy Virtually Obsolete?, was published in December 1995. She served on the Executive Board of the Journal during the 1995-1996 school year.

Work Experience

Sandi Byrd began her legal career in 1996 as a Law Clerk for the judges of the Sixteenth Judicial Circuit. She then went to work for the Kane County Public Defender’s Office from 1997-2002. In 2002, Sandi opened her own law firm and focused her practice in criminal, juvenile, DUI and traffic defense. in 2005, she opened the law firm of Zuelke & Byrd, LLC in St. Charles and Aurora, Illinois. In 2013, after many years of practicing law in Kane, Cook, DuPage and the surrounding collar counties, Sandi opened her Chicago office to allow her to focus her practice in Cook County. 

Sandi is a member of the Illinois State Bar Association where she is currently a member of the Criminal Justice Practice Council. She is a member of the Kane County Bar Association where she has served as General Counsel, Chair of the Criminal Law Committee and Chair of the Delivery of Legal Services Committee. She currently serves on the board of the Kane County Bar Foundation. Sandi is also a member of the Chicago Bar Association and the DuPage County Bar Association. Nationally, Sandi is a member of the National College of DUI Defense Lawyers and the National Association of Criminal Defense Lawyers.

Sandi Byrd has been recognized by her peers as a Leading Lawyer in the areas of Criminal Defense and DUI Defense. She has been named one of the top ten female criminal defense lawyers in Illinois for the past two years and was named one of the top three female lawyers in Kane, Kendall & DeKalb Counties.

Ms. Byrd has published articles in the Kane County Bar Association Bar Briefs and has been featured in the Chicago Tribune, Chicago Sun-Times, Chicago Daily Law Bulletin, Aurora Beacon News, Elgin Courier, The Daily Herald, and the Kane County Chronicle.

Sandi proudly serves as a volunteer attorney for Hope Legal Clinic, which is housed at Hesed House, a homeless shelter and resource center in Aurora, Illinois. She also serves on the Board of Trustees for Hesed House.
